Sept. Book Club "How to Talk So Kids Will Listen and Listen So Kids Will Talk"

Hi Everyone,

I sent out an email that our September book club will be held Thursday, September 19th. But I think I'm going to change it to Wednesday, September 18th, because Mutual is on Thursday nights. It will be at 8:00 at my home, 6804 West Marie Jonsson Circle.

Our book is How to Talk So Kids Will Listen and Listen So Kids Will Talk by Adele Faber and Elaine Mazlish. Used copies on Amazon start as low as $5.80 and on Half.com there are some older editions that start as low as $0.75. There is also a CD at the Highland Library if anyone's interested in listening to the book.

A little disclaimer, of course in the book all the scenarios always turn out good, but hopefully there's a few things you can take from the book that will help you when communicating with others. Also, you don't have to have young kids to read this book. I used some of the listening skills I learned from it when talking to my sister who had a problem and it helped. I'm hoping people can finish the book a few weeks before our September book club and try out some of the methods. That way when we meet together we can discuss what ideas worked with our kids (or others) and what didn't.

Thanks,

Emily

July Book Club @ Tiera's "The Rent Collector"

Ladies - Thanks Valerie for book club last night!

The book that I have chosen for July is The Rent Collector by Cameron Wright.

"The Rent Collector is the story of a young mother, Sang Ly, struggling to survive by picking through garbage in Cambodia's largest municipal dump. Under threat of eviction by an embittered old drunk who is charged with collecting rents from the poor of Stung Meanchey, Sang Ly embarks on a desperate journey to save her ailing son from a life of ignorance and poverty. It’s a tale of discovery and redemption in which she learns that literature, like hope, is found in the most unexpected places.
Though the book is a work of fiction, it was inspired by real people living at Stung Meanchey."

A little background on the book.  The author's son served a mission in Cambodia.  After he returned, he went back several times to do humanitarian work and to film a documentary of the people living in the dump called "River of Victory."  After seeing the footage from the documentary, Cameron Wright decided to right a novel about these people.
I am hoping that Thursday,  July 11th will work for everyone.  I'm going to try and get a copy of the documentary.  That may be fun to watch at book club!

Hope you enjoy the book!

Welcome Book Lovers!

The purpose of this blog is to help us keep track of what our current/next book is, who is hosting and choosing the next book, etc. Also, a main purpose is to have an ongoing list of books we have read. That list is located on the right side of the blog in case you didn't notice.
We have now been a book club for over 6 years! We love books, eating super delicious desserts and getting together with the some of the most amazing women in the world. Yep, the world. :) Love you all! Thank you for 6+ fabulous years of book clubbing. And still going strong!
